How Instituto InvestBrasil works internationally

Instituto InvestBrasil carries out institutional cooperation with embassies, consulates, chambers of commerce, investment promotion agencies, international organisations, companies and other strategic entities, through agreements, memoranda of understanding, missions, projects and joint programmes.

The institution may nominate and recognise qualified professionals for roles in representation, coordination, economic cooperation, trade, investment and international relations, always in accordance with the law applicable in each country and the powers set out in its Statute.

Is an Economic Diplomacy Advisor an official diplomat?

The designation of Economic Diplomacy Advisor is an institutional role tied to Instituto InvestBrasil, under its internal rules and statutory powers.

This designation does not in itself confer the status of official diplomatic agent, diplomatic immunity, a diplomatic passport or any prerogative reserved for representatives formally accredited by governments.

Any appointment to or recognition of an official diplomatic, consular or government post depends exclusively on the procedures, authorities and legislation of the respective State.

What is an InvestBrasil Economic Diplomacy Advisor?
It is a private institutional designation granted by the Brazilian Institute for Investment and International Cooperation to professionals who voluntarily contribute to strengthening ties between Brazil and international markets. The advisor works to foster institutional coordination, identify opportunities, and support economic cooperation missions and initiatives.
Does this appointment confer official diplomatic status?
No. The designation is a private institutional recognition. It does not confer a public office, a diplomatic or consular position, diplomatic immunity, a diplomatic passport, the prerogative to represent the Brazilian State, or any governmental authority. The Brazilian diplomatic career is governed by Law No. 11,440/2006, and entry is granted exclusively through a competitive examination administered by the Rio Branco Institute.
What is the legal status of Instituto InvestBrasil?
The Institute is a private, nonprofit organization that operates independently and maintains dialogue with public authorities, foreign governments, and the private sector. Independence and dialogue should not be confused with a functional relationship: the Institute is not part of the public administration and does not act on behalf of the State.
Can the council member present himself as a diplomat or as a public official?
No. The advisor must always identify himself or herself as an “Economic Diplomacy Advisor for the InvestBrasil Institute,” making clear the private, institutional nature of the appointment. The use of any title that suggests a public, diplomatic, or consular role is prohibited and will result in the immediate termination of the appointment.
What are the expected responsibilities of a board member?
Identify and evaluate investment and cooperation opportunities; establish and maintain institutional channels in the region where the Institute operates; support the Institute’s missions, forums, and initiatives; and provide insights into the economic, regulatory, and cultural context of the market in which it operates.
Is the role paid?
No. The title is honorary, and participation is voluntary. There is no salary, employment relationship, term of office, hierarchical subordination, or exclusivity. Expenses related to specific activities, if any, are handled on a case-by-case basis and always by prior written agreement.
How does the selection process work?
Expressions of interest are submitted via the form on this page and undergo a review of the applicant’s profile, alignment with the Institute’s priority areas, and a reputation check. If approved, the appointment is formalized in a separate document, which specifies a defined term and rules of conduct. The Institute is under no obligation to appoint candidates and does not provide individual justifications for rejections.
Is there a requirement regarding citizenship or residency in Brazil?
No. The network is international by design, and board members may reside in any country. What is evaluated is their actual capacity for institutional coordination in the relevant market and their adherence to the Institute’s principles of integrity.
How long does the appointment last, and how does it end?
The appointment has a fixed term as specified in the formal agreement and may be renewed. It may be terminated at any time at the initiative of the board member or the Institute, and is terminated immediately in the event of misuse of the title, an undeclared conflict of interest, or conduct inconsistent with the integrity policy.
How does the Institute handle the data submitted through the form?
The data is used exclusively to assess expressions of interest and to provide updates regarding the process, in accordance with Law No. 13,709/2018 (LGPD). Consent is recorded with the date and the exact wording accepted at the time of submission. The data subject may request access to, correction of, or deletion of the data through the Institute’s contact channels.
